The Military Officers Association of Sarasota (MOAS) has been sponsoring Task Force 1/64 Armor, part of the 3rd Infantry Division, on their second deployment in Iraq. Basically, we send them packages of things they need and let them know we're standing with them as they put their lives on the line. Other units will be designated in January. Our mission is simple. We Support Our Troops who are in harms way. We do not address the geo-political aspects of their effort or dialogue about the pros and cons of national policies. We support the troops. Churches in the area have been a major source of this support and we're asking for your help. Our new web site, www.supportourtroopsMOAS.com, has just been opened and explains the well-organized program in detail. It now includes Posters and Church Bulletin inserts, so it will be easy to share with your church. It's been our experience that folks are just looking for an opportunity to send help to our men and women fighting in this war. Here are a couple of examples of help from area churches. The Church of the Palms sponsored a "Support Our Troops" effort that resulted in over 300 boxes being sent to soldiers in Iraq. The United Methodist Women (UMW) of the First United Methodist Church collected Beanie Babies for soldiers in Iraq to share with children they meet. Cash donations were also taken to purchase telephone calling cards. Over 550 Beanie Babies were collected and $490 cash was donated. Covenant Life Presbyterian and other churches and organizations have joined forces in this effort to let the troops know we care. Support can include tax-deductible financial contributions that will be used to buy gift cards or phone cards for service persons hospitalized in the United States. If desired, we will provide complete instruction packages (Kits), mailing labels, and "Flat Rate" Priority Mail boxes, which can be easily filled with needed articles and mailed overseas for a $7.70 flat rate fee. Thank you for your prayers and help, James Hesson, Brigadier General, US Army, Retired Telephone: (941)926-8702 |
